A Letter of No Impediment is an official document that is used by South Africans who intend to get married in foreign countries, in most cases, to a citizen of a nation abroad – while residing in that particular country. When Is a Letter of No Impediment Required?

South Africans currently situated overseas who have been previously married, and wish to engage in the legal act of marriage with a resident from a country abroad, will need to apply for a Letter of No Impediment (together with a decree of divorce) before proceeding.

An original Letter of No Impediment can be legalised on an officially signed and stamped Home Affairs letterhead by an authorised official, which the DHA is able to authenticate. It’s also important to know that a legal Letter of No Impediment can only be issued by the Head Office of the DHA and NOT Regional offices.
